Interactive Game!

For all you Torchwood-Addicted UK resident's who have some time on their hands and like to play pretty interactive games, you might want to check out the interactive game on the Official website.

It's a brilliant set up: Ianto Jones (who, in this capacity makes me want to yell 'hi Charlie' at the top of my lungs) is the face of the game and gives all us lucky minions a mission weekly. This week the mission was to find out the last person to see Professor Conrad Fischer alive before his disappearance. It was fun! You got a video from tosh, a police report with hints and a nifty CCTV device thing where you can see cool CCTV footage relevant to the investigation.

It's the best interactive game I've played in a while (if you re the kind that likes hunting around on the Internet for clues, which i am) and the addition of Mr Jones offering me a position certainly keeping me interested [INSERT INNUENDO RELATED MUSINGS HERE!].

It looks set to be an added dose of weekly Torchwood fun, with more video's mysteries and case files to enjoy. The game portion of the site also boasts the nifty personal emails and case files from last year, only without that terrible navigation system thing that annoyed everyone.

UK viewers can check it out here and non-UK residents can go here (it's not as good, but at least you're not missing out completely).

All fun!!

Technology rant!

Technology!

ICK!

Pro's and con's to laptops

PRO: Technology on the move. Watching Torchwood on trains, in the car (when not driving), at work etc.

CON: They're flimsy things who love going wrong.

I should have had the recap/review/picspam up by now (it was delayed by John Barrowman in Panto - he split his pants and it was all extremely hilarious from the front row) but the damn laptop decided it was going to have 'issues' and overheated, going kaput. So i hope to update the blog tomorrow before the episode airs, then do a recap/review/picspam on Thursday for episode 2. (I've also started full time work this week so that's held me back too.

busy! busy! busy!

Normal service to be resumed shortly.

Squee day is finally here! (Jack/Ianto post)

The wait is over! and after 381 days of waiting we're finally nearing a NEW! season of Torchwood (at time of writing, it's only 9 hours and 27 minutes to go)

In that 381 days I have drank approximately 1,223 units of alcohol (calling it 2.8 units a day for my nightly tipple and adding in a bi-monthly binge), 1,143 cups of tea & 762 cups of coffee, into which i have dunked 3,810 bourbon biscuits (that's 266,700kcal FYI), in addition to this i have spent about 182,880 hours online and blinked 3,291,840 times (give or take a couple thousand.) Add to that 2,660 hours of sleep, 115 hours applying makeup and 58 hours removing it.

That's scary!

But not as scary as working out that i have spent 200+ hours watching episodes of Torchwood and many more hours talking, writing and thinking about it. It's enough to make a girl convince herself that she's obsessed or something.

Most of the time spent talking/writing/thinking about Torchwood was actually thinking about one thing in particular; the Jack/Ianto pairing. Now, in many fandoms the idea of 'slash' is usually one created by fangirls' minds, but the wonderful thing about Torchwood is that, for once, this slash pairing is not a figment of our imagination, a bi-product of decoding subtext or pure fantasy. It's real. And that is something that I think is a very good thing.

Many things have been said about Russel T. Davies in the past, mainly revolving around this 'gay agenda' conspiracy that the press, and a big chunk f the public, seem to have created. To say that Torchwood has a 'gay agenda' would be to say that every television show that pairs a man and a woman together has a 'streight agenda', and can you imagine the drama that would cause?

So, just because I like to show them, and on the expectation of many more of these moments I would like to show you some pure and un-photoshopped pictures from IMO one of the best moments from Season 1.

here's for more of that in season 2!

Don't forget to tune into BBC2 tonight at 9pm (as if you would!)

Stepping out of the Fan mould for a look at Torchwood.

I've been going through my computer lately trying to free up some space on my poor little hard-drive for all the screen caps I'm going to make for season two, and along the way it got me to thinking about series 1 of Torchwood. It seems so long ago now and the five main characters have been burned into my brain so much that I'm left trying to think if I can remember what my first impressions were. So, out of duty (and not at all because I'm suffering from withdrawal and wanted an excuse to re-watch... again) I sat through the entire season, trying to keep an open mind, asking myself some questions whilst trying to remember what my first impression of the series actually was and if I actually did notice all those 'flaws' that people constantly ramble on about.

Question 1 - Does the show really have all that much swearing?
Answer - No.

Where I will be the first one to admit that Ep 1x01 (Everything Changes) does contain an excessive amount of swearing (no fewer than 21 at my last count) I don't think this was true for the rest of the series. It seems to be more down to Character than anything else:

Jack - Jack Doesn't swear at all in season one, this is mainly due to the fact that he's a character from a family show and so doesn't swear for that reason. You actually don't notice unless you consciously think about it.

Ianto - Ianto is a fairly restrained chap, but he does swear twice in the series, however, both of these instances were during Ep 1x04 (Cyberwoman) and I think it works. His hoarse cry of, "Have some fucking mercy!" made the scene powerful and had he said, "Oh let over Jack," it might not have had the same impact.

Toshiko - Tosh doesn't swear much at all, in fact off the top of my head the only swearword I can recall her using is in ep 1x11 (Combat) when she uttered "shit" whilst tracing Janet through the streets with the tracker device.

Owen & Gwen - I'm putting these two characters in the same box mainly because they are the worst offenders. They swear more than anyone else in the show and it just seems to be the way they speak; everyone knows someone who slots in a random swearword into a conversation for no apparent reason, and that just seems to be the way these two characters operate.

In my opinion there wasn't too much swearing, however, cutting down on the amount wouldn't have been a bad idea either.

Question 2 - Is there too much sex?
Answer - No.

With the exception of Ep 1x02 (Day One) thee was actually very little sex in the first season. One sex scene between Owen and Diane (ep 1x10, Out Of Time) was about as juicy as it got. Of course we did see Tosh face a sexual encounter with a very sexy alien in Ep 1x07 (Greeks Bearing Gifts) but we only saw the buildup and the aftermath. So to say there was too much sex is, in my opinion, people not looking beyond episode two.

However, there may not have been a lot of sex, but there was a fair deal of sexuality, but I don't see this as a bad thing in a show that centers around the characters in a way that Doctor Who never could. If a show is going to centre around a team and their relationships, then it makes sense for sexuality to pay a big part in it.

Question 3 - Are there plot holes?
Answer- Yes.

One of the weaknesses of Torchwood season 1 there were more than a few plot holes, and no I won't list them. They ranged from small plot holes, to craters, but in some way that made me like the show more. There's something nice about missing pieces of the puzzle in a show like Torchwood that keeps me interested (it also gives fan-fic writers plenty of ideas which is always a good thing).

Of course plot holes weren't the only problem; there's no denying that some of the characterisation was patchy and some stories just didn't fall right, but they are all things that can be fixed (and look to be in season 2 if reviews are to be believed.) What a lot of people forget is that a first season of a show is never perfect, and flaws can be forgiven. You show me a first season that's perfect and I'll show you an impossible dream; if something is perfect then there's no room for improvement and where's the fun in that?

So where did the main problems lie? I would say a big part of it was the imbalance of screen time. Gwen topped the screen time tally with an average of 23.3 minutes per episode, Jack was second with 19.8 minutes, followed by Owen with 17.4 minutes and Toshiko with 15.3 minutes. Right at the bottom of the list with a shameful 8.7 minutes was Ianto (if you take into consideration that he topped the screen time in Ep 1x04 with 30:03 minutes this shows just how underused he was in season one). The difference of 14.6 minutes between the average screen time between two characters is a very big gap and it left many people feeling as though we had just seen too much Gwen. Jack was meant to be the lead character in Torchwood, yet he still came second place to Gwen which seemed to make the series feel unbalanced.

So one of the show's main failings was Gwen Cooper; many fans found her overcooked, and in fact Chris Chibnall and Eve Myles admitted this themselves on the season one commentary. Gwen was a gateway character that not many people seemed to identify with; her role as 'heart' of the team was more vague than anything else and we didn't really see her create a solid role for herself (she didn't really liaise with the police much if that was supposed to be her role.)

But as easy as it is to talk about what they got wrong it's often forgotten that they also got a lot of things right; one of these things was the creation of the character Ianto Jones. He started off as a background character, notching up a painfully low 2:21minutes of screen time in the first episode, and he could have so easily faded into the background. But thanks to a few good lines, sharp suits, realistic sense of humanity (all be it with a dark undertone), and a fantastic actor to do him justice he quickly became a fan favourite. And yes, it may have had a little something to do with the fact that the actor was painfully gorgeous, but as gorgeous as someone can be it can never make up for talent and the ability to sell a scene and emotion in the way that Gareth David-Lloyd has manged in this role. He turned a character who could have been a background figure into a major player (in fact cult-spy recently announced him as a cult icon.)

Episode-wise Torchwood S1 was a little bit of a mixed bag, not every episode was brilliant (I don't think any series can promise that) but none of the episodes were anywhere as bad as some of the so-called 'fans' said they were (not even Random Shoes), and I found them all good stories with characters I really found myself loving. And of course the blossoming, if not frustratingly ambiguous, relationship between Jack and Ianto certainly kept many a fan girl on the edge of her seat.

Of course it's impossible to say whether or not season 2 will fix all these flaws, but the reviews so far seem to suggest some of the problems have been ironed out. Time will only tell, but if there's one thing that this fangirl is sure of it's that she'll be sitting on the edge of her seat every Wednesday at 9pm fr 13 weeks, watching the wonder of Torchwood unfold in front of her eyes and most likely loving every minute of it, flawed or not.

PS: (thanks to Crabby Lioness for all the screen time figures)

Trailers, previews and pretty guest stars await us.

~~*~~ CONTAINS SPOILERS~~*~~

So with less than 2 days to go until the start of a NEW! season of Torchwood we have been spoilt by Aunty Beeb with trailers and previews a plenty (5 trailers and no fewer than 4 previews) and it seems as though that long and painful wait is almost over (at least for UK residents. US residents have to wait util the 26th of this month and God only knows for the rest of the world.)

But the wait has been anything but easy for us Woodies.

It's been a year since season one finished (one year and 13 days if you want to be precise about it) and since then the fandom has been sitting on a quiet buzz awaiting the new season. Spoiler threads have been gagging for information, Torchwood spotters have been out with their cameras and fans from overseas have been watering at the mouth pleading for any snippets of info they could get their hands on. It's really only been fan discussion, speculation and bucketloads of fanfiction - oh and Gareth David-Lloyd and his lovely attendances at conventions - that has kept us sane throughout this last year. Many of us were starting to think the day would never come, but now it's almost here and the fandom is buzzing again, high on the anticipation for episode one (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, penned by head writer Chris Chibnall) which seems to be promising us all those things that we have so dearly missed and/or craved for so long.

Of course nothing can be guaranteed, but they do seem to be dangling some pretty spiffy writing, brilliant direction and solid plots in front of our noses, as well as some great performances from the cast if reviews of the episode are to believed. The upcoming season places a mouth-watering platter of guest stars, with legends like Alan Dale, James Marsters, Nerys Hughes and Richard Briars on the menu to tickle our taste buds. Of course nothing can be more pleasing than the return of our favourite alien hunters; Captain Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato and Gwen Cooper are back on our screens (this time on BBC2) with even more aliens to hunt, mysteries to solve and colleagues to shag. You gotta love the promises the come with a Torchwood tag.

We've already seen plenty of action in the trailers, with promises of huge explosions, aliens with spike-like arms, hot man-on-man action and one huge alien eye, as well as a whole lot o shooting. We've seen fish-like creatures, strange mosquito type things and the ever-appealing James Marsters cleverly disguised as Adam Ant-meets highlander, complete with a huuuuge *ahem* sword, two scary looking firearms and a psychopathic personalty to match.

I won't lie.

The promise of such things almost made Mistress Torch sexually excited; quick flashes of a dominant-looking Ianto kissing Jack, and the very pretty PC Andy delivering another knockout line about "spooky do's", along with all those guns and explosions gave her everything she has asked Santa for. But she held back, they were just trailers after all; the lines weren't in context and you really couldn't tell how the dialogue was going to feel. But then they delivered the previews. No fewer than four preview clips!

The one thing that came across clearly in the preview clips was the improved team dynamic; a scene in the first preview shows Owen, Gwen, Tosh and Ianto chasing a Blowfish through the streets of Cardiff at Midnight (no, seriously, this is Torchwood. It's normal.) They all seem to be relaxed with each other and closer, sparring it up a storm and one hilarious moment where Gwen shouts "BLOWFISH!" is surely legendary! When the chase is over and the team sprint into action we see the team doing what they all do best: Owen is actually being a Doctor for a change, Tosh has her gadget, Gwen is protecting a terrified woman and Ianto - as usual - is left with the clearing up to do, which in this case involves shooting a Blowfish before it can shoot someone else. At this point Jack comes into the picture - and yes, he shot the Blowfish, not Ianto - and the team dynamic was so good i was almost dissapointed that it was interrupted. But no, with an introduction of "hey kids, did you miss me?" Jack is back and the team is reunited. (And I said almost dissapointed)

The second clip to come out of Aunty Beeb was a fight scene (featuring Jack, and his ex-lover captain John Hart), beautifully sandwiched between two adorable team scenes. The best thing about this preview was probably the genius of the music! I'm sorry, but anyone who can't see the genius of Blur's Song 2 during a fight scene is truly insane (in the bad, this-person-really-needs-to-be-institutionalised kind of way) because its perfect! The scene is loaded with erotic overtones as Jack clearly adores being thrown around by his ex-lover, and my favourite moment, without a doubt, is the moment Captain John sweeps the bar with Jack's face. Oh! and there's a kiss too. Personally it was more the smouldering look before hand and the knock-me-down punch after it that I found hot, but hey it's two hot guys kissing so I'm not going to complain too much. The two team scenes I mentioned earlier are completely owned by the presence of Ianto (In a very attractive pink shirt) in the first half of the scene he's in fix-it mode, calling "TAXI" and finding the simplest solution to a problem that Owen, Tosh and Gwen would have found the most complex resolution to. In the second team scene it's Ianto who provides the team with the voice of reason, reminding them that it's a lot more fun when Jack's around. Also worth a mention mind you is Eve Myles' perfect comic timing and phrasing of the word 'top secret' that for some reason almost made me fall out of my seat.

The third Preview was the introduction of the Team to Captain John. It was short and sweet. A quick introduction of 'Torchwood' which prompted John to be very much unimpressed by the team name. (Also worth mentioning: Geek alert at the suggestion of Excalibur as a team name which if you know your TW trivia will make you feel like you got one over on all those who don't, but will also make you feel like a complete idiot when you try to explain it and they call you a geek.) The most interesting thing about this scene by far though is the dynamic between Captain John and Ianto Jones; it seems as though John has sussed our Ianto out from the word go by the way he told him that he and Jack were 'partners'. And f he didn't guess it before, the low jealous tone when Ianto asks "in what way?" would have made it glaringly obvious. After this he knows for sure and gives Ianto a taunting look and proclaims "in every way and then some." It's enough to let us know that the dynamic between the two of them is going to be interesting and something to be very eagerly awaited.

The last preview - so far - was a very interesting scene in Jack's office with the whole team, John hart and a very gorgeous hologram. Turns out John wants a diamond, and the hologram (of an ex-lover he murdered) promised it was on earth. However, much to his surprise it's actually just an excuse for her to get her revenge on him by giving him a ten-minute death sentence; an explosive device grips onto his chest and she vows to see him in hell. It's at this moment that the truly sadistic, slightly twisted and very satisfying side of Ianto comes out as he digs out the stopwatch and counts the minutes to John's impending doom. He sounds so excited, he's like a child at Christmas and you almost expect him to start skipping around his love-rival like a happy elf on pixie dust with pure smug glee written all over his face. Only it's at this moment that John Grabs Gwen and handcuffs himself to her; with three guns trained on him he tells Jack that he had better find a way to stop it.

It's all very exciting, and although we've probably seen 1/5 of the episode through preview alone it's still something to look forward to.

The dialogue is brilliant, the dynamics seem tight, the acting performances seem spot on and the cinematography makes the scenes feel fresh and fast-paced. All the characters - yes, even Gwen - come across likable and if i wasn't a fan the previews alone would make me want to watch.

There's only two days to go now until the full episode is shown (in the UK) and my gut feeling is that it's going to be sharper, wittier, faster and darker than season 1.

Mistress Torch at your service

Mistress Torch here.

Ooh! First Post, I'm 1/2 giddy, 1/2 scared and 100% insane.

It's only polite to introduce yourself when you're going to share your ramblings with the world I think, and so here's my very first post; a ramble on about who Mistress Torch is and why in fact she feels the need to start blogging in the first place.

Mistress Torch (aka Jo) was born somewhere in the north-east of England (there may or may not be Magpies nearby) in 1984, to two strangely normal parents. Mistress Torch lives with Master Torch and her parents in a very small house that creates a vaccum of tension, which eventually leads to arguments and tears on a daily bases, but also allows for her to be close with her whole family. It is suspected that at some point during her childhood she may have been dropped on her head, resulting in a strange sense of humour and the ability to ramble on about absolutely nothing at break-neck speed.

She has dark brown hair (or blonde, or black, or pink- depending on what comes out o the bottle), hazel-coloured eyes and a cute little button nose (or so her family tell her). Mistress Torch is 5ft 6 in six inch heels and has an uncanny ability to shrink to 5ft 0 by simply removing her shoes. Mistress Torch can be spotted a mile off, typically recognised by leather wrist straps, netted fingerless gloves and more eyeliner than a kiss reunion tour. Her natural habitat is on her sofa drinking Jack Daniels and watching Torchwood and/or surfing around forums as well as talking to a fantastic girl who is her self-confessed fangirl (even though Mistress Torch is sure that she's just trying to flatter her or get her into bed - either way is fine.)

She's got a bit of an obsessive personalty, and so from time to time throws herself completely into the world of fandom (the pretty men are just a coincidence of course) and worships it for a little while until it dissapears and she finds another to worship. At the moment Mistress Torch has thrown herself into the world of Torchwood.

If you don't know what Torchwood is then:
1) Why are you reading this blog in the first place?
2) Shame on you!
3) Look it up!

The reason for this blog is to make a record of the mind-shenannigans of Mistress, and to give what she feels to be an accurate portrayal of a fan's view to the show. There is one thing that pisses Mistress Torch (abb. MT) off, and one thing only:

Those so-called fans who say they like the show, yet slag off every detail of it. NEWSFLASH: if you don't like the chracters, storylines, writing, direction, production, plot and general concept do not call yourself a fan. You are not a fan. You are an arsehole posing as a fan (usually in order to hang around forums and piss fans off and give them a very bad reputation)

*steps off soapbox*

So MT is therefore creating a 'happy blog', now this isn't to say that she can't criticise. MT can be nice about an epsode at the same time as pointing out flaws, but she prefers to be constructive about it instead of detrimental.

It's worth pointing out that MT is a Jack/Ianto shipper and much in favour of slash, so her posts will be featuring slash heavily.
